On December 17th, more than 70 children had the chance to fly on an airplane to the 'North Pole' thanks to Comair, one of KFK's primary sponsors. For the past three years, Operation North Pole has provided hundreds of kids at risk with their first visit to an airport and their first flight!
The children arrived at Comair's headquarters near the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, both excited and nervous about their upcoming experience. For the first time since the event's inception, two flights were flown in the air, versus one flight and a ramp ride (which taxis on the runway, but does not take off). After checking in and receiving their boarding passes, everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner from Domino's pizza. Prior to boarding the plane, the children had the chance to meet former Bengals kicker, Doug Pelfrey, and Comair's mascot, RJ. Before the kids knew it, it was time to board the plane!
Each group received a friendly greeting from the flight crew - who were all dressed as Santa's helpers! Before taking off, they answered all of the children's questions about the plane, and explained the various sounds the children were hearing from the engine. The kids' anticipation grew as the plane picked up speed on the runway. Suddenly, the plane rose from the ground, and shouts of excitement filled the aircraft! The pilot took the children on a unique journey around the city of Cincinnati, pointing out various landmarks, and keeping their eyes open for Santa and his sleigh! All eyes were glued to the window, staring in wonder and amazement as the ground grew farther away, and the cars became smaller and smaller. After singing Christmas carols and taking in the sights, it was time to land in the North Pole!
The children were buzzing with excitement as they filed off the planes; they couldn't wait to visit with Santa! Prior to their visit, they first stopped at the 'Santa Watch' control station, where Comair's employees were helping to monitor the weather for Santa's travels at Christmas. Each child then visited with Santa, and received wonderful gifts. They also took part in several activity stations, including a balloon station, making 'reindeer food' and a stocking decorating station (to name a few).
Kicks For Kids thanks Comair, Dave Soaper, Cyndi Caldwell, Donna Herron and all the other employees for making this magical night a reality
