In conjunction with our long-standing partners, the Covington Housing Authority and Covington Independent Public Schools, KFK hosted an Olympic-themed sports camp in early July at Camp Kern in Oregonia, OH. Participants were divided into teams representing Brazil, Canada, China and the U.S.A., each competing in a variety of activities for the gold, silver and bronze medals. The sports camp was part of a seven-week camp our partners hosted for local children. In order to attend, the campers had to have met certain criteria throughout the last school year: quality behavior without disciplinary referrals, superior attendance and academic achievement.
Just as the Olympic Games traditionally begin with a torch relay and opening ceremonies, so did the Kicks For Kids Olympics - but with a twist! For the first challenge, each team had to find their torch on Camp Kern's site. Teammates pieced together a trail of clues in order to find it, and Team China was the first to return to the camp's central location, winning the Torch Scavenger Hunt Challenge. The first day then wrapped up with two-hand touch football and whiffle ball.
The theme for the second day was "Wet & Wild Day", and it certainly lived up to its name! While the morning began with a game of basketball, wacky relays and 'beach towel volleyball' soon followed. Teammates cheered each other on during the shaving cream balloon relay, and then relied on their creativity to make the most inventive 'snowman' with only shaving cream and the items surrounding them. 'Beach towel volleyball' encouraged campers to try something new and work together as a team. The kids then had an exciting game of kickball to complete the day's events.
Dr. Ted Lambrinides, an exercise and nutrition expert, kicked-off "Strength, Fitness and Leadership" Day. He provided the campers with information on healthy food choices then challenged them to go through a series of stretches and exercises. It provided the perfect warm- up for the next event -- soccer! Campers participated in the "Obstacle Course and Relay Challenge" for the fourth and final day of the KFK Olympic games. The event consisted of 11 different challenges, incorporating every sport played throughout the week, and included new obstacles as well. Each teammate was required to complete at least one leg of the relay. Teammates cheered enthusiastically as campers raced towards the finish line in canoes!
In the end, Team China took home the gold, Team U.S.A. was awarded the silver medal, while Canada and Brazil received bronze medals. During the closing ceremonies, KFK Founder Doug Pelfrey spoke to the campers, emphasizing they don't have to be the best or the winner at everything. Instead, he encouraged them to continue to challenge themselves and to try new things, just as they did during the KFK Olympics.
