KFK's Great Outdoor Adventure (GOA) takes place at Potter's Ranch in Union, Kentucky. There are approximately 380 acres of wilderness and activities, providing the perfect setting. The event benefits 60-75 children who are five to ten years old and reside in inner city and rural areas. The GOA takes place on the second or third Saturday in October, and the goal of the event is to introduce children at risk to an educational and fun-filled outdoor experience while also giving them a view of a world larger than they are used to. They also get to meet children from all around the tri-state and spend time with adults that care about them and their enjoyment.
The GOA starts around 10:00 AM. The young guests are split into groups, and over the next several hours they are given the opportunity to fish, fly on a zip line, ride horses, go on a hay ride, work on team building exercises and enjoy a wilderness hike / scavenger hunt. The children have adult chaperones, which assist and look after them throughout the day. The day ends around 6:00 PM, and includes lunch, dinner and an inspiring message from Doug Pelfrey -- all at no cost to the child or his/her parents or guardians.
A key component to the GOA's success is the location where it is hosted -- Potter's Ranch. Not only is it a safe outdoor site that is far from the kids' everyday environment (literally and figuratively). It is also a place where mutual respect is demanded for everyone involved, which is a refreshing change for many of the children that attend.
Thanks to the unique setting, the new and exciting opportunities offered to the children, and the love given to them by the chaperones and volunteers, the GOA is an experience that will stay with the kids forever.
