Tom and Sue Simpson have been involved in a variety of Kicks For Kids youth events and fundraisers, serving as volunteers, sponsors and committee members. Despite all of the time they have put towards the charity, they are extremely humble in all of their efforts. In fact, when KFK informed them they were chosen for this month's Volunteer Spotlight, they argued against it, saying it wasn't necessary!
Sue first learned of Kicks For Kids while working at Meijer about nine years ago. Her store was located in Florence, KY, the same location where KFK's Christmas Committee went to pick up some things for the Christmas Celebration. After speaking with Doug Pelfrey, she knew she wanted to become involved. Tom, who currently works for Meijer, also vividly recalls his first introduction to KFK. He was living in Columbus at the time, but was visiting Sue in Cincinnati. "Immediately when I arrived, Sue said we had to go to a function where Doug Pelfrey was speaking," Tom chuckled and added, "It was my birthday!" That evening, Tom recalls Doug speaking very passionately about the charity and its impact. "I just thought it was nice he was giving back to the community, and I wanted to be a part of it in some way," Tom said.
Tom and Sue have participated in the majority of KFK's fundraisers and youth events in some facet ever since. They have served as volunteers at the annual RGI River Run, and for several years Sue has helped secure winter coats for the children attending the Christmas Celebration. "I've been involved with a number of charitable organizations over the years, but none have impressed me like KFK's," Sue said, "Every volunteer and person I have met associated with KFK's seem to have a shared goal of putting Doug's vision of helping children in our community first." Currently, Tom and Sue serve on the Golf Committee as well.
When asking why they stay involved, Tom immediately answers, "The people. The people Doug surrounds himself with have always been so positive. I have not met a negative person," The people have become a family to them, sharing in life's ups and downs. We thank both Tom and Sue for all of the time they have extended to Kicks For Kids! Thank you for being a part of our family.
